Students in the Terrascope first-year learning community take charge of their learning at the onset as they work together to develop the skills that enable them to analyze and solve complex problems with global implications.
Starting in the first semester, Terrascope challenges each year’s students with a complex problem focused on issues of sustainability and the environment—past topics have included water scarcity, disappearing species, world hunger, and what to do about rising levels of atmospheric carbon—in a credit-bearing subject, 12.000 Mission 20xx, named for their class year. In the spring two subjects are offered that focus on communication. Students can also participate in a one-week field trip to gain firsthand experience of issues they have studied during the year. Core science and mathematics subjects are taken outside the program.
